A new study has found evidence that the human brain is capable of understanding abstract, mathematical concepts.

“The study shows that humans can understand abstraction. When a mathematical concept is shown to the human brain, the brain is able to understand the equation,” says Thomas A. Seyfried, University of California, San Diego Professor of Psychology, associate fellow in the Institute for Educational Science and Research and a member of the Brain Research Institute at The Rockefeller University in New York.

The study was conducted by an international team of researchers that included Seyfried’s students and postdoctoral associates and is published this month in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Using functional MRI, they were able to show that understanding an equation or mathematical idea is based on the activity of several separate parts of the brain. “Our study shows that abstract, mathematical concepts, if understood, can activate different parts of the brain related to spatial, auditory and linguistic information processing,” says one of the study’s lead authors, Dr. Jonathan C. R. Seyfried, who is a postdoctoral fellow in Seyfried’s lab.

Other study authors were Seyfried’s PhD students Yee-Ping Lee and Ruhal Arshadian: research fellow Yi-Kai Li; graduate students Anis A. Shehata and M. A. F. K. Shah; postdoctoral fellow Piotr R. Kuczmarski; and Seyfried’s undergraduate studies students Joseph J. T. Smith and Michael J. W. Taylor.

The study used functional MRI (fMRI) to measure blood flow in a region of the cerebral cortex where abstract, math-oriented concepts are processed and that contains an increase in blood flow during mathematical processing.

In the study, the participants performed an auditory task, which involves generating a series of numbers to determine which number corresponds to which set of notes in a musical composition. The study participants were instructed to press a button as fast as they
