Most people think belly dancing is easy to learn. This should be a no-brainer, right? But it’s not true.
Belly dancing requires a tremendous amount of technique. You have to learn all of the fundamental motions that determine your pose and also how to change the way your shoulders move. This is not something that many people can do once.
Here are some things you need to know to learn:
Your shoulders need to move in two different ways – your upper and lower body must be able to do it. This is very important, as it helps you keep your balance if you stumble.
Your posture with your legs must be in line with each other. Your heels are supposed to be in line with your toes. You should never be hunched over your head.
When you do a forward roll of the back you have to do it with a neutral spine posture – don’t try to bend the spine or head. You should keep the back straight when you do it. If you use a front roll, you are pushing off the floor and that can give a lot of pain.
When you do forward rolls, you often have to work to your limit so that your body doesn’t take off. This is a little tricky as your body will be pulling to the outside while you roll, and your body will be pushing on the inside, so it’s a tricky thing and you need to be very careful to stay in control.
When you do these poses and you have difficulty doing your poses properly, this could be caused by lack of strength or coordination. This can be a sign that your muscles have gone too long without rest. If it is only muscle exhaustion that you have, you can go back to rest or get some training on. If it is muscle fatigue caused by a lack of rest, it’s better to stay in the gym or go see a physical therapist.
Learn a dance class or learn some self dancing
One of the things I love about belly dancing is that there are a lot of different styles. If you are starting out, take a look through the classes and see what classes are out there to help you get better at dancing.
A common question is, “How do I know what type of class or dance is best for me?”, but it’s important to have a goal and set a schedule of when and where you should practice. Do not be afraid to experiment and explore your own style if you don’t already.
