A guy walks up to me one day and says he has an idea for a game he wants to make and he wants to come up with ideas for it by the end of the week.
“What’s a game you want me to make?”
“I don’t know. Something you draw?”
“Yeah, something you draw for a child or something.”
“What do you do?”
“I draw,” I tell him, my eyes always on my drawing pad.
“Really? Awesome!” he says. “I’m going to work on it for a few days now. I’ll come out and talk to you in an hour. When I get done I’ll give you some feedback.”
Two weeks later I get a call from the guy again. This time, the subject is something called a “game.” This time the guy asks if I want to make it.
“What if I tell you that I am going to make a game that’s a combination of your favorite things?” I ask. “I know your favorite things.” He responds to that by saying, “Do you really think people would buy it? No way.” No way? Wow. Okay, I think. I’m totally on board for this one. I said, “Sure. Who else did you think would really buy it.”
We make a call and go over the game concept with him over five minutes. That’s it. I have nothing to say, so the whole idea falls apart. But that doesn’t mean I wasn’t impressed.
“I never thought of that.” But at some point in the conversation we have to get on the phone. We talk for a while. I tell him how much they were going to save on this project.
I then go to another guy, but he says that this doesn’t interest me. I tell him we have enough work to produce another game. We continue to talk in generalities, but I have something for you by the end of the week.
I don’t want to think about what it would look like on my kids’ screens. I don’t want to worry about the price tag. If they can sit down and play what I can see with my own eyes, you know, they’ll be impressed. I hope they’re impressed. I hope my artistry makes a difference. And I really really hope it’s something they want.
