Do you use a color picker, a printer, you try to replicate a logo in Photoshop, some sort of image-editing program — in short: what are you talking about? As it turns out, there’s already a professional who can help you do that: Jon Peddie Research.
So, with this article, I don’t mean to suggest that you shouldn’t ever, ever use Photoshop to draw a good logo, though — if you’ve got the basics down, that’s the easiest way. Instead, I’m going to discuss my own experience, which has been the inspiration behind my latest creation. Let us begin?
Getting your logo
“I don’t think it’s something I’ve ever really understood,” said Scott Miller, a photographer in Austin, Texas. “I don’t know if I would ever go to a logo design class or even a logo design workshop,” he said, “because, personally, I don’t really know what I want to do.”
You do have to know your branding goals and a direction to go in; however, to Miller’s mind, the thing most important at this stage is knowing what your brand looks like and how to go about creating it.
“The best way to determine your brand’s look,” says Miller, “I’d say is with a good font, with a good color scheme, a well-written logo. And I don’t think anything else matters, really. And then, in addition to that, if you have a strong sense of who you are, and what the brand means, and what a logo is — all those little things, I think that’s the best way to make sure, ultimately, that everybody at the company knows who you are. And when they ask questions about you, when they want you to share with other employees, they’ll be able to ask those questions.”
I should note that I came up with the company name, Blue Star Automotive, after visiting several auto-body shops along the Interstate 40 corridor in the San Fernando Valley. The blue-and-white pattern on all of the paint and in the logo — a motif with a distinct and almost retro feel — gave me an idea of what I was looking for on the inside.
