The United States, a powerful, advanced military, and its military partners have taken decisive action in response to the deadly attack on the American consulate in Benghazi that left U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans dead. The president authorized the use of military force, including ground troop operations, in Libya, and is working to deploy the additional forces necessary to deal with the threat against American diplomatic personnel.
On September 11, 2012, President Obama authorized an operation in Libya, “to protect Americans in Libya and to disrupt terrorist networks,” according to a White House statement.
The mission was successful, and the United States conducted operations against terrorism in that country throughout the following months. In late December, the American mission in Benghazi suffered a tragic loss. U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other U.S. personnel died in the terrorist attack. The president directed that four U.S. military personnel be sent to Libya.
On Wednesday, October 28th, 2012, U.S. forces, including Special Operations forces, along with the U.S. Marine Corps and National Guard arrived in Benghazi to begin the operation that ended five days later. Approximately 30 U.S. personnel were sent to Libya for a total of more than 40 military personnel.
The current mission is focused on the security of the State Department annex in Tripoli, Libya. The Libyan operation will begin on Friday 30 October 2012.
