He took a deep breath, exhaled, and got back to work again.

“What about you?”

“This was more difficult than you’ve drawn. Well, I just turned in my first cover. And I’m drawing the Mustang for it, which means we’re just getting started.”

“Oh, cool! So what’s your next one?”

I took a breath, held it, and answered.

“I think the Mustang’s one of the first two horses I drew. Like it’s the first one that I draw. I was drawing a mule one week before this. I drew the mule once in the fall. My brother has done it since I was an adult.”

“Yeah, I’ll bet. That’s not a bad drawing by most standards. But that’s not really my type. I love a drawing with the rider, horses, and some kind of creature as the main character. I’ve done many a time.”

He thought about what I had just said and laughed. He was looking forward to the next book.

“But there’s another one I draw that I’d like to draw. My friend’s mother drew it. I think our favorite in the whole world, I guess.”

“A girl in the movie is the only one riding your horse?”

“Yeah. It’s her.”

I gave out a big sigh of relief. The horse could handle himself now.

“I guess it’ll be the next book.”

“It’s good to see you again, too. It’s so nice to see somebody who’s a good reader. Now, get back in the saddle, let’s go out and do some fun things. Good luck with the book.”

I returned to my seat, opened the book, and continued reading.

It was about a week later when I returned from my first day of training with the Mustang. I was in my office with Mike to show him what I had gotten done. I was ready to come in for a rest so I could do any training I needed to do. He walked over to me and I gave him a hug.

“Don’t worry, Mom. These are some good horses you’ve got. Just keep working on them and they’ll get better.”

I turned around and looked out at the lake with Mike. It wasn’t a beautiful time
