Do you just have a kind of sketch that is made and then you draw? Do you just kind of go into a room and just do it? Or do you have a list of the elements that you are thinking of in a person? What do you do?
That’s the point when you’re thinking about something that sounds a bit more intuitive than actually doing it. For me it was all sorts of things. I got kind of obsessed with having good ideas about the human form. What are the essential elements of what makes a person so different from other animals. That’s what was in my mind. I would start from what I believed to be natural laws such as the fact that they’re essentially one kind of animal and one kind of lifeform and do an examination of them and try to understand what they do, but as I did it I would try and make those ideas work. How do I create humanness?
You’re so open to what will happen and what may happen to you and what you’re trying to do and how it can relate to what’s there.
Yeah I think when you are so open to what will happen and what may happen to you and what you’re trying to do and how it can relate to what’s there you will take those things and make them come out of the world as you want them to. You know, there was a little bit of improvisation about what I did. There wasn’t enough real work involved. One of my main principles is always to not get bogged down by rules and to do as much as possible with what you have.
I really enjoy those aspects of storytelling. I loved this idea of working really closely with the writer and knowing when a story is done. When it was all finished and you are done, which one of those two things are you more or less happy with?
The one where you are happy with the story is when it’s completely written and you do it. You know you have done everything that was said, you have all the ideas and you don’t have to worry about how the writer is going to use them within the narrative. The other one is when you are satisfied with that. There you go. You got the story, you don’t have to worry about the guy who is rewriting it all. You were satisfied with the story. You are happy with that.
Yeah, I think that’s a really great balance.
I think that’s really how you know it’s done. Because
