One week ago, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved a new set of rules for internet service providers (ISPs). Under the rules, ISPs will have to allow consumers to bypass the “fast lanes” currently offered by large ISPs on their websites by making their websites load through a dedicated virtual lane. If all goes well next month, the rule will require ISPs to get approval (and fees) to offer such specialized “fast lanes”.

So, a few questions:

One major internet service provider is already selling fast lanes at the current rate of about 8 dollars for every two cents of data traffic. That’s basically one-tenth of the cost for a ten megabit per second (Mbps) connection, which is roughly the speed many people pay for cable at home, and just one-eighth the cost of “fast lanes” offered by AT&T and Verizon.

A few other companies sell similar services and have recently announced pricing plans. In addition to this, Verizon and AT&T have agreed to buy Netflix.

The company that already sells fast lanes has been selling this service for quite some time, and they are using these offerings for the purpose of “duplicating the experience for ISPs of the ISP of the ISP of the ISP” (AT&T). That means this fast lane does not represent a direct cost increase to consumers (which means that it’s still a free service) while the ISP can pay to keep serving it.

And that’s what they will offer.
