Aston Villa have completed the signing of French goalkeeper Gedion Zelalem from French champions Marseille.

The 30-year-old has joined Villa from Montpellier this week, having been in the side since arriving from Lille.

Zelalem began his career with Montpellier where he won four French Cups, two Ligue 1 and two Coupe de la Ligue titles.

He moved to Lille in 2008, spending the previous five seasons there winning numerous trophies as the club secured a top two finish.

He left Marseille in 2010 and was briefly on loan at Nice before leaving in August 2014 for the £6.5million fee.

Zelalem, who grew up in France, came to the attention of Villa fans when he made a number of brilliant saves during Villa’s FA Cup semifinal defeat to Chelsea with the Gunners.

Villa boss Steve Bruce is pleased to have secured the services of a big name.

He said: “We are delighted to bring in a goalkeeper who is a proven goalkeeper internationally.

“That will always be a key factor in our selection and in our thinking about how we can keep those players happy.

“We are looking to recruit another goalkeeper and that is why we went to Marseille. We know they are a top-class keeper and we have great admiration for him.”

Villa were already without two of their back-up goalkeepers after the summer arrivals of Matt Reed and Tim Howard but this move has lifted their position in the Championship.

Zelalem replaces Howard who made just nine league appearances in the campaign’s opening two months in the top flight.

The keeper will be competing with Jordan Amavi and Jordan Veretout for the first-team role in the run-in.

Bruce, who signed the veteran keeper after being sacked as manager at Birmingham City earlier this month, would like to keep his best chance of getting promoted to the Premier League from the Championship.
