It’s the energy that the power plant loses to heat in the reactor core and to thermal radiation during the cooling cycle. There are a few reasons that “solar” power, including that developed at the University of California, Irvine, doesn’t qualify for the 0 dB protection it currently gets. But, it’s hard to overstate how important it is to those of us who believe we’re better off – or can, at least, afford the extra power – than the average American. If we lose this freedom of choice today as a society, we will miss some of the most fundamental advantages life and technology have to offer. And that should make us worry about just what might happen with a change in the law, or an election.
