To get some idea where I have been on this topic in the past I thought I might give a little overview from an academic point of view. I am a Professor of Physics at the University of Edinburgh, and have a particular interest in some aspects of the physics of magnetism, such as magnetomagnetism and electroweak (negative) magnetism, and also some aspects of quantum theory and information processing. I started to pursue a Ph.D. in theoretical physics in 1996. In 2003 I was invited to speak at the UK Academy of Science, and took part in the conference organised by the UK Centre for Quantum Science at the University of York and the Universities of Birmingham, Bristol and Edinburgh. The seminar was followed by a series of lectures at the University of Oxford University, and the lecture notes for the conference proceedings have been uploaded to the European Journal of Physics for anyone to access, so I guess you all get a good sense of what the talks themselves were like – the whole thing involved a lot of discussion about the nature of magnetism, and about the nature of quantum mechanics – in particular how entanglement can be understood in a non-classical way to allow the existence of a kind of hidden energy-field (called magneton or “magneto-spin” as it is sometimes called) that is related to particles (eg, atoms) that are described as having a definite energy. It is important to stress here that these ideas relate to the way in which we think about the world of nature. I am also aware that these views are not at all uncontroversial. On the other hand they can sometimes be a little difficult to take for granted, and especially if you are starting out in the real-world sciences where “obvious” features of the world can be a little confusing. This is especially the case in physics. For example, as I said above, I recently gave a public lecture in Cambridge on the importance of entanglement. I can honestly say that most of my audience didn’t even notice that the speaker had been speaking about the nature of magnetism during the lecture. My point was pretty simple, I said: “The two of us both have a very tiny bit of free energy which we can use to cancel out the other guy’s energy and keep his going.” One of the questions I asked to the audience is what do we do with these free energies when they are not being employed?
