Do you do research and put your best horse out there? Or do you have that little one in mind that you think will just take home the prize? If you’re like most people, when you think about picking up a new horse – chances are you find a great one online. If you’re like most people, you usually have to track down one yourself in the comfort of your home, at least until you can afford to buy one for yourself. If you don’t know where to start, you’re going to go down a rabbit hole in your search.
The most obvious approach to getting into horse racing is starting your own club. You can use your skills as a trainer to set up a good and competitive club. For example – let’s say you’re planning on taking your horse to the World Championship here in the U.S. (that’s a $30,000 prize pool). You decide that you want to run a 4-year-old, 4-year-old-1-year-old race. You can’t go out and spend $60,000 on an expensive trainer or a team. You’ll need to build a new home for the horse and pay a lot of money for equipment. You can spend more than $30,000 running this horse, which leaves you having to pick from another group of horses you’re not really interested in competing against. You wouldn’t even be looking to compete against the winner, just in case, right?
One of the best ways to start a horse racing club is to find a strong, experienced trainer who has a background with horses. You can talk to the owner/coach, get to know their club/track history. You can then see who they need to replace from their stable with someone who could step in and give them the horse they need to win a championship for them.
