I have played over 150 hours of the lute, but I was only taught the instrument through years of playing. All of the other people played it since they were kids, and then they started doing it professionally. There are people all over the world who do it professionally right now. It’s cool because if you just do music, you’re just an old guy. There is so much history in this instrument.

Where do you see the ukulele going in the near future?

The ukulele has a huge impact on our world every day. And if we were to put our full attention towards making this a viable instrument, I know there would be an explosion in use. But to be honest, as a solo musician, I just want to do what I love. I don’t want to sacrifice my other passions.

When former Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley was indicted earlier this month for allegedly trying to evade prosecution in connection with a 2012 domestic violence case against his then-wife, he had an unusual ally in his defense: the NFL Players Association, which filed the defamation lawsuit that was part of the indictment.

The case, which Bentley has vigorously defended for nearly a year, involved NFL players’ criticism of the former governor’s wife and his use of state resources to promote his legislative agenda.

It’s not the only time the NFLPA has sued for an accounting of its expenses in recent years, a practice that began when the union sued former President Clinton for using taxpayer funds to pay for his charitable ventures and then, as the scandal unfolded, sued over the use of the Secret Service and the federal debt collectors.

NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith filed a defamation lawsuit for an invoice it claimed was paid by the Alabama Athletic Program and was intended to support Bentley’s personal expenses during his first term as governor, according to documents obtained by ESPN.

The lawsuit alleged NFL Players Association general counsel Greg Aiello sent an invoice to Bentley’s campaign and Bentley’s legal defense fund for legal fees related to the case. The billing, said the filing, “was billed to the football field at Bama.” It also said the invoice was provided to Bentley for his use, but the billing information was changed to make it appear that it was for a non-NFLPA related effort.

The NFLPA says it was trying to get to the bottom of the charges, which they said came in the form of invoices to legal defense funds.
