From the start, it can seem like you’re speaking out loud while holding a small microphone. At first it feels effortless – that’s what it’s set up for – but the harder a voice becomes, the more it seems like a part of the performance. It’s something that the performers, and you, have to become accustomed to. It takes some practice. Then it seems like a huge leap; you don’t want to do that.

Do I have to speak in a way that makes it look as if I’m singing?

One trick is to focus on a single word or phrase. You have to listen for it. The trick is to focus in. The more you focus on the word or phrase the better it is. For instance, if you wanted to sing the words “pussy,” you might have to stop for a second. But then you might be singing the syllables of “pussy” for your friend – or for yourself. If it sounds awkward, stop and take a few paces before continuing.

Can I use the technique, known as “dilatation” to increase the power of the vocal part?

You can use this method as long as your voice is still strong enough to let you do this. I’ve been using it for years, and I’ve never heard someone say, “That sounded way too loud.” My technique is sound-timing. I say ‘sounds’ and listen closely. Then if you hear the sound, then you know you got it correct.

Does each phrase of my speech have to be exactly the same as my best moment in a speech?

No. Many dancers try to repeat the exact phrase that they used. If you get a bit of a laugh or make a snort, it will sound funny. There’s nothing wrong with these things.

How do I learn how to practice?

You can listen to a tape of yourself or a famous voice on the internet – and ask a friend for advice. Once you learn the tricks, look for an online teacher who is good at the subject you love. Sometimes these people can answer some questions in a few hours – or even only a few minutes.

I see photos and videos of people practicing their techniques. How do I go about mastering them?

Try to practice in a place where there aren’t too many people, and where you get to practice for an hour or more until you’re comfortable. It sounds easy
