A couple of weeks later the surgeon removed it,” he said.
Bolger had no knowledge of the procedure before the surgery. “There’s always some risk with anything that goes underneath a skin layer,” she said.
“When you are bleeding, you can get cancer but what you don’t need is a skin graft,” she added.
There are two basic methods of removing blood cells. The first is called embolisation; which involves removing the bone marrow and replacing it with healthy tissue.
However, the second method, called liposuction, involves removing all the blood cells leaving only cells in the vessels. The surgeon then uses light pressure to “soften” the tissue to prevent the cells from re-growing, and this prevents infection.
A spokeswoman for the Royal College of Surgeons said: “All surgeons can tell you if they have done an liposuction.
“The risk is very small and is dependent on the size of the blood vessel being removed. However it is very important that the surgeon is fully conscious of the potential complications that could occur, and make certain that the skin and blood vessels are removed in a safe and painless way.”
