Can Rex get some revenge against his ex?

The “Revenge of the Titans” season premiere airs Sunday, Oct. 18 at 9 p.m. on Fox.

PITTSBURGH — Steelers owner Art Rooney II has been in a holding pattern since the Steelers’ season ended, but that has nothing to do with a lack of interest. He just isn’t happy about it.

Instead, he is focusing on the future of the franchise.

“The first thing is, we really don’t need to talk about any of this at this point,” said Rooney during an interview with WTAE-FM in Pittsburgh. “This has been two weeks. We are ready to start talking about everything.”

There were a couple months of rumors, speculation and questions about how Rooney might move forward. The Steelers didn’t exactly set the world on fire during his tenure, losing Super Bowl XLIX and their fifth Super Bowl in 11 years. But a new regime has arrived in Pittsburgh, and there won’t be any discussion on how the franchise will move forward. That’s no surprise and it’s not because Rooney is ready to let the world go. It’s because the franchise needs to move forward in order to move forward in football, and he’s ready to do that.

It sounds as though he’s already discussed a multitude of different scenarios with team officials and ownership. One could potentially involve the Steelers trading backup quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to the Kansas City Chiefs. But the Steelers are not interested in dealing their top two quarterbacks at this stage, and the Steelers have no interest in trading Roethlisberger simply because they don’t want to move Roethlisberger.

The Steelers have talked about other things. They’ve talked about whether head coach Mike Tomlin can remain the head man in Pittsburgh after leading the Steelers to this point, and they’ve talked about the potential of bringing a backup quarterback in to start in 2017 as well. The Steelers and NFL announced that they are scheduled to have offseason meetings to get more information on all options.

It’s clear Rooney is fully engaged in his discussions and the owners want to see if anything changes. There will be a lot more of that in the future. As far as what happens from here on out, he said, “that’ll be up to the Steelers.” And that’s probably good news.
