What kind of people would you need to be around?

I don’t know if I’m actually interested in these.

I think the thing with these characters is they could be interesting in any setting, so long as there are enough people in the world. For instance, this show is basically based on the stories about the people who come to this town in the 1800s. If you’re only talking about one time period, you’re going to lose a lot of ideas and you may get in trouble because you haven’t got the story to tell. I was going to write a character called “the first woman detective” or “the first African American detective,” and we just decided that that’s not interesting for us. I think it’s great to be able to have these ideas and be very clear in how they come, even though it’s also a very interesting question whether there’s even a world out there where it’s possible for a woman to be a detective.

But, with the characters themselves, we don’t want them to be just people with big mouths and big hair and big biceps. That seems like the kind of stuff I would really watch, and it’s going to be a good thing. There is a real difference between a manly gentleman and a manly dandy.

In this season, we saw that you are kind of taking a step back from the character while on the other hand, you are very much in the director’s chair. Why is that?

I really get bored easily. When I was doing the first season, I was watching The Wire and the first season was really intense and was full of great characters. Then in this season, I was playing these people who were playing people. There’s a huge disconnect between what we are doing now when we start the show and what we’re thinking. When we were first starting this season, I think it was pretty clear where we were going, but from the second episode, I think at a certain point, we were starting to feel like we needed to take a step back. To me, it’s not that we don’t love the character, we just realize how he feels and how much he wants to do this job and what he wants to do, and we don’t feel an attachment to him or feel like we really want to be there.
