“I just do it.”
What’s your favorite piece of music? “I’m not a good singer. I’m not much of a singer, and nobody cares.”
Have you ever worked with any famous performers? No.
How was your relationship with David Bowie? “David and I had quite complicated things after we broke up. We had been very close for so long, I really would have like to have had a relationship with him again. But he didn’t want to be around me, and I didn’t want to be around him anyway. We never spoke for years. He was always very much apart from me.”
Do you have any special gifts for performing magic? “I have a talent for improvising and really feeling things out. It’s not all in your head; it’s all in your body. That goes for singing, dancing and acting and just about anything else I can think of. I’m really good at just feeling the energy of the whole room. It’s not in my physical body or mind but rather in the room. You can’t see it, but it’s there. I can improvise a thing by just feeling it out, and that’s how I do things. I’m always thinking about the best things to do, and I’m always improvising what the best thing to do is. You have to be able to improvise, and once you have that, it’s almost a natural talent.”
I’ve heard that you’ve been a magician for over 20 years. What has it been like working with famous people and where have you got that ability from? “I mean, we’ve always worked with artists. A lot of my earliest memories are working with artists, in the ’80s with Andy Warhol. His art was amazing. I was really into Andy Warhol when I was 12, 13. I went to school with him and he was a good friend of mine. Andy Warhol was really into the ’90s and just became an artist just working out and thinking about his art. He wanted to experiment with his art. This is probably just the best thing I can say: working with artists in the ’80s was very important to me. That was important to me to study the art of a lot of musicians and artists and figure out how I could be like them. It was great to have some of my artists get close to us and become like us, to be able to do magic with them.”
