Humans produce a complex array of muscle contractions that are synchronized when we move our hands and legs. These signals travel along nerves from the arm and hand joints to the spinal cord, all the way down to the muscles of our feet. As the signal travels, it affects a single muscle.
The first movement of a muscle that is thought to be caused by an electrical signal is called voluntary motor action. This is the first signal that moves all the way to the spinal cord and then to the muscles of the bones in the arms, or the first action of the muscles that are being controlled as you walk. The third movement of the limb is called involuntary motor action. This is when the voluntary action that just resulted in the first motor action is replaced in favor of the involuntary motor action that precedes the first. The fourth movement of the limb is called involuntary motor action.
The fourth movements occur with each step in walking.
It is the involuntary movement of the arm that can be thought of as a first step followed by two more in order to get there, or “half a step” in the case of walking. As a result of the involuntary motor action (the involuntary arm movement), we feel that the arm moves more than it actually does — that the arm is actually “half-way” to the destination. This is called a “paralysis”, because half of the arm’s movement remains unchanged.
How do you move a muscle when it is at rest?
At rest (or “at rest state”) of the muscle, all that can be felt is the muscle’s tension in that state. However, many muscles have a short period of rest during which they move more slowly than during the rest of the muscle’s action. Muscle’s at rest state is often referred to as the “normal” state of a muscle. A muscle that is not at rest in any of these periods does not function well.
If you try to make any movement at rest, you will find that your arm muscles start to move less quickly than normal, because they are no longer at rest. In fact, muscle may take some time to complete one full stride. When the muscle is at rest, it does not have to do much work to accomplish one full stride.
