What happens when he does it? I think it happens because he does it. He takes the softest pencil that he can think of and says, I don’t understand how it looks in my drawing hand, and he does that without a lot of thought. And he does it perfectly, and everybody can look at it – that’s what a good drawing is. When it’s done, how good it looks is very, very important and it’s very hard to look down on it because everybody can see it. But, you know, this is something that we’ve been doing for a long time.
JK Rowling: No, it’s been around since the beginning of the 20th century and is something that’s really been around since then, but it was the start of my career.
So I’ve always been fascinated with drawing and with the different methods which have been used to do it. When I was younger I liked drawing with sandpaper, but I’d just never been able to get into it. And then one day when I was writing Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, I realised that there’s this technique called ’tiling’ where you use the ends of a pencil to mark out a small size, and then with the ends of the pencil again, you draw the area that you want to enlarge in the image. So instead using the tip to go all the way across the pen, I just kept it on my desk. Which is one of those things I do not do. And it didn’t take long before I did, and I thought, Well, what’s the point? I’m drawing a line of letters, and it gets to be a bit of a waste if I’m writing on an easel and getting all this done on a whiteboard. So I just started drawing the whole page with the lines of writing on the whiteboard. And this is how you get a good looking thing: you write something, and then at the end of it you remove all the letters and you can see them on the whiteboard. But it’s only when you have a good hand drawn image, and you put the pencil through the paper and draw your picture in the way you want it, that you can see all the fine details and really appreciate the difference between a good hand drawn image and a bad hand drawn image. And that’s why, for me, it is something that never goes away.
