While it isn’t illegal for women to dance, many young women, particularly those who are the daughter of wealthy or powerful men, may shy away from the whole practice. Many women who work in the entertainment business and those who attend the annual gala also fear that doing so could attract unwanted attention.
According to the Society for Individual Rights in Education, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit for students, the “law can be confusing for aspiring dancers,” especially when it comes to issues around consent and sexual harassment.
Some women worry that performing in front of strangers may even make someone feel pressured into something they don’t want to do.
“To me, lap dancing is dancing and there is no shame,” a young woman told the BBC after a performance last year, adding, “What does it matter if someone feels uncomfortable, as long as you are having a good time?”
WASHINGTON — A year ago, it seemed that Hillary Clinton’s campaign had been crushed — it was a complete and abject shambles. Her disastrous performance in the first Democratic debate seemed to seal it. So when the two-time presidential candidate was asked about her prospects going into 2016, she quickly became very defensive.
“It’s never easy. You never know the state of the campaign until the election is over,” she said. “It’s a great opportunity. It’s my dream that I can run for president as a Democrat and I’ll be the nominee because of the support that I’ve gotten across all those years.”
To be fair, some Democratic voters weren’t ready for the first female nominee of a major party. It was a different Democratic Party. But it also wasn’t really a Democratic election — and it was Clinton’s first race, so her candidacy was a very different beast from the Clinton-Lewinsky one. It’s clear that what the former secretary of state and U.S. senator did in that debate last September, not just in her remarks to the reporters with her, but also in her actual actions in the general election, was to help the Democratic Party, especially those in Southern and Southern-based states, to come together behind her. And now they think she has the kind of support, the kind of goodwill to run, to run in 2016 and win it.
We’ve spent the last year observing these developments and making forecasts. We have no hard evidence of what will happen on Saturday. If Clinton continues to be the frontrunner on Saturday, it’s a pretty safe
