To many, pole dancing is just another form of dancing, and it may seem, to some, to them like “funny dancing” – if they weren’t watching it for the first time. But the dancers I’ve met have told me they don’t consider their style to be “funny.”
For some it’s because they like looking like they’re having fun – for many others, it’s just because they like seeing women doing moves that they have never seen. I have dancers who come up to me after a show and say ‘I know your dancing style – it’s amazing’, or ‘Oh, I saw something you were doing that was similar to what I did.’
What are three lessons dancers can learn from pole dancing?
I’m sure that everyone with any experience of dance, pole dancing being one of them, already knows some of the most important lessons.
One is the importance of a firm foundation to the ground – whether the floor being set or the pole. In other words, what you want to make sure is the base of the body, where you have a balance between the floor and the pole, is firm enough that the dancer can stand up on it without injury – a lot of the time.
Secondly, you have to be aware of how to dance around the pole to get the best spin, and that’s the point at which you must learn to balance the pole with your body. So when you try to spin as high as possible on the pole, and make it appear to move up into your legs, you need to have your hips lower. When you’ve learned to control that, you’re then able to spin at a higher speed, which then allows you to have a much easier time keeping your balance on the pole. And from there you can try any other tricks.
And finally, pole dancing is not a dance for all, and I’m sure that the fact that it is more challenging for some people than others, doesn’t lessen its value for them. After all, if it was easy, everyone would be doing it.
So what tips would I give dancers who come into a pole dancing class?
In my opinion, a beginner dancer has to be comfortable doing the moves – it’s not just to be ready when they say, ‘Okay, get out of here!’
Secondly, they have to be able to make the proper arm movements. As a beginner, you need to be very comfortable on the pole, and
